New Puppy and Kitten Care

March 15, 2025

First Week Essentials for a Happy Home

The first week with your new pet sets the tone for a lifetime of health and happiness. Here at Twin Pines Veterinary Clinic in Askov, MN, we love helping families welcome new furry members into their homes. This guide walks you through how to prepare your home, establish healthy habits, and get your new puppy or kitten off to the best possible start.

What should I prepare before my pet comes home?

Setting up a safe, cozy space is step one. Here’s your starter checklist:

  • Food and water bowls that won’t tip easily
  • Age-appropriate food recommended by your vet
  • Crate or playpen for safe confinement and sleep
  • Toys and chews for stimulation and teething
  • Litter box or puppy pads depending on the species
  • Collar, ID tag, and leash for walks and safety

Petproofing is a must, especially with baby animals. Make sure dangerous items (cords, houseplants, cleaners) are out of reach. Consider using baby gates or barriers to limit access to unsafe areas. Ask your Askov, MN vet for more information.

How do I help my new puppy or kitten settle in?

The transition to a new home can be very stressful for Fluffy and Fido. Pets can be quite distressed by major changes, and may feel scared and uneasy until they settle in.

 Help your pet adjust by:

  • Keeping things calm and quiet the first few days
  • Introducing family members slowly
  • Feeding the same food they had previously, then gradually switching if needed
  • Establishing a consistent routine for meals, sleep, and potty breaks

Visit our veterinary clinic in Askov, MN within the first week to get your new pet checked, vaccinated, and set up on the right care plan. We love meeting new patients!

Vet visits: What should I expect in the first week?

You’ll need to bring little Fido or little Fluffy in to meet their Askov, MN vet. Your puppy or kitten’s first exam includes:

  • A full physical checkup
  • Weight, temperature, and dental check
  • Vaccinations and parasite prevention
  • Microchip discussion and ID setup

We’ll answer questions about nutrition, socialization, training, and spay/neuter timing. Starting great veterinary care early is key to catching any concerns and building a relationship with your vet.

What behaviors are normal during the first week?

Expect accidents, lots of naps, and some nervousness. That’s totally normal!

Puppies may cry at night—this fades as they bond and settle

  • Kittens may hide or act skittish until they feel safe
  • Chewing or scratching helps relieve teething or anxiety

Offer gentle reassurance, keep your routine predictable, and give them time. Avoid overwhelming them with guests or major schedule changes. If your pet misbehaves, don’t punish them for it: focus on positive reinforcement instead.
